Searching for a photo gallery software

I just wanted to find a software, which would create a photo gallery from a folder of photographs. It
should be free and windows-based. I have evaluated quite some of them, so I thought I would at least list some of the better ones and declare the winner. I have also considered describing and comparing the software, however I think that the individual needs are so different, that it is for everybody much easier to go through the list and find the winner of his/her own.
